Environmental Sustainability
According to Planning NSW, a dwelling is built every 14 minutes in this State. This rate of growth puts additional pressure on our energy and water resources.
SCA (NSW) has recognised the importance of environmental sustainability for our future, and has established a working group to look at how existing strata titled buildings can be made more environmentally sustainable.
Building codes and environment ratings for new buildings have already moved to address environmental sustainability. Therefore, the working group will focus on existing residential strata and community title schemes.
The working group consists of representatives from the broad SCA (NSW) membership. Their brief is to focus on 'Environmental Sustainability in Residential Strata'. They will identify opportunities for energy and water conservation and how these may lead to savings for owners corporations. The rationale is that these savings can be accumulated and subsequently applied to additional environmental improvements. The group believes that sustainability initiatives have the potential to become self-funding over time.
There has been a widespread shift in community attitudes and behaviour in relation to environmental sustainability. SCA (NSW) has taken a responsible position to support this shift and use the expertise of members to identify opportunities for building re-design.
Information and findings from the group will be distributed to the SCA (NSW) membership to provide a framework for strata managers to consider how to best assist their owners corporations in this very important matter.
Findings will also be used to help draft a white paper to seek legislative change to support the initiatives.
